What is The Pottery?

The Community Learning Center’s pottery studio, also known as “The Pottery”, offers a wide variety of classes; up to 6 week wheel throwing class, various handbuilding classes, team building events, private parties, and more!

We also offer memberships for those ceramic artists that need a place to create and want to be a part of a diverse group of potters.

Lindsay Brown

Lindsay earned her Bachelor’s in History & Art History from DePauw University and her Master’s in Elementary Education from Ball State University. She has been the Art Teacher at J.E. Ober Elementary in Garrett, IN since 2018. Her mission is to build community and help other find joy in art!

Teagan Koble

Studio Technician &

Teagan Koble brings both technical skill and creative energy to the studio community. A BFA student at Purdue University Fort Wayne with a concentration in ceramics, Teagan is passionate about all things clay — from mixing glazes and to creating her own unique pieces. Her hands-on approach and continued pursuit of knowledge regarding ceramic materials help ensure the studio runs smoothly and safely for all members. Whether she’s loading kilns or reclaiming clay, Teagan is always ready to lend a hand and keep the creative energy flowing.

Debbie Walterhouse

Private Instructor

Debbie took her first class at IPFW in 1996 and now has over 25 years of experience. She is always learning and continuing to take classes and workshops. She is a Kendallville native and a mother of two daughters. Her inspiration for her work derives from nature, especially the ocean. She prefers to work with adults students. She specializes in pinch pots, jewelry, and wheel-throwing. She is known for creating a calm, fun, and inviting environment.

Private Pottery Lessons
The Pottery offers private lessons for individuals who want to build their pottery skills one-on-one with an instructor. Lessons are open to beginners or people who are looking to hone their skills or learn a new technique. If you are interested in a one-time class, please check our class listings for other options. 

  • Option 1 – Going Solo (must commit to two sessions)
    Cost: $60 per session
    One instructor, one student for a wheel-throwing or handbuilding lesson for 1.5 hours. Cost includes all materials (including clay), glazing and firing (if you have a finished piece). Students should plan for an additional 15 minutes to clean up after the lesson. Let us know if this is your first time – or if you want to learn a new technique. 
  • Option 2 – Two Times the Fun (must commit to two sessions)
    Cost: $90 per session
    One instructor, two students for a wheel-throwing or handbuilding lesson for 1.5 hours. Cost includes all materials (including clay), glazing and firing (if you have a finished piece). Students should plan for an additional 15 minutes to clean up after the lesson. Let us know if this is your first time – or if you want to learn a new technique.

Please note, this is a community space. While instruction is one-on-one, other members may be working in the studio at the time of your lesson.


How do I get to The Pottery?

  • The Pottery is located at 401 E Diamond St in Kendallville, Indiana inside of the Community Learning Center.
  • The quickest way to get into the Pottery is through door 16 which is off of Sheridan St.
  • The Pottery will be the first door on the right once you enter through door 16.
